In a surprising announcement, Oracle has said that they are donating OpenOffice.org to the Apache Foundation.
In a surprising move, Oracle handed over the source code for OpenOffice.org to its erstwhile adversary, Apache. In the process, the open source office productivity suite is also switching from GPL to Apache licensing, reducing the chances of any reconciliation with forked rival LibreOffice, which has been supplanting OpenOffice on Linux desktop distros....
The results are in on the voting to make OpenOffice.org an Apache Incubator project and the idea got approved, by a majority of voters.
Following last month's excitement over the ongoing OpenOffice.org saga, it seemed like things on that front were quieting down at last.
This week, the main talking point in the world of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) is Oracle giving OpenOffice.org to the Apache foundation. There has been interesting developments for Ubuntu as well.
Things are never dull here in the Linux blogosphere, but there's no doubt they would be a whole lot less entertaining without Oracle. How else, after all, would we get the opportunity to ride on a thrilling emotional roller coaster such as the one Oracle's had us on since it acquired Sun? Regarding OpenOffice.org, in particular, it's been one hair-raising twist and turn after another.
