Optus has launched what it says is Australia's first mobile operator application developer portal, Optus Partner Connect, designed to give developers the opportunity to showcase and sell their applications direct to the Optus mobile customer base.

Optus last month became the first mobile operator in Australia to offer femtocells as a full commercial product. Optus promoting them as solution for Optus mobile customers with poor coverage in their homes.

Optus has selected Nokia Siemens Networks to upgrade the core of its mobile network to the Evolved Packet Core.

With great fanfare, Optus today launched what it says is a ‘revolutionary’ new offer for Australian consumers, giving away for the first time, 50GB of free home broadband to its customers who sign up for its mobile and other telephone plans.

Optus has secured additional spectrum in regional Australia that it says will greatly increase the capacity of its mobile network, increasing its ability to meet the surging demand for mobile broadband services.

Optus has introduced new mobile and fixed telephony plans for SME with more than 20 employees, offering unlimited standard national calls from fixed, and in some cases mobile, phones to Australian fixed line and cellular mobile numbers.

The nation's number two telco, Optus, today revealed it had selected Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) to be its sole packet core vendor, in a multi-million dollar contract that will allow it to face its growing bandwidth needs.

A year after 'entering' the Australian market with the acquisition of local fixed and mobile service reseller, Startel Communications, and the signing of an MVNO agreement with Optus, UK based Truphone has launched services in Australia.
