As word processors for Linux keep picking up in popularity, household names in the computer industry are getting into the act. Like Sun Microsystems, Novell and IBM Lotus are both offering word processors based on OpenOffice.org's open source Writer application, but none of these offerings is exactly alike.
Word processing is perhaps one of the most essential uses for a computer on any platform. The Linux OS offers more obscure word processors than other OSes; however, few of these apps offer users the staying power of AbiWord.
Are you interested in a word processing environment that's more or less the same across multiple PC desktop and mobile platforms--a Linux notebook and a Windows CE device, let's say, or a Macintosh PC, a Windows XP netbook, and an Android phone? How about a word processor that comes with abundant tech support, or one that handles complicated documents relatively easily?
Unlike conventional word processing software such as OpenOffice.org Writer and Microsoft Word, online equivalents such as Google Docs and Zoho Writer are browser-based, requiring the installation of little or no additional software on your PC. Yet online word processors can carry some drawbacks, too.
Word processors that work across Linux and other OS can offer advantages you won't find in MS Word, even beyond crossplatform operability. But whether or not they're free of charge in the financial sense, there can be other sorts of price tags attached. In working with some of the newer and less conventional alternatives, you're likely to encounter certain learning curves.

Unfortunately, the updates for AbiWord are too few and far in between.
Word processing isn't what it used to be. With the rise of the Web, the need for feature-gorged programs like Microsoft Word have diminished. On the other hand, for many scribblers, barebones text editors are just too limp to satisfy their needs.
