The space shuttle Atlantis has lifted off from the surface of Earth for its final trip into outer space. Its six-person crew is heading for the International Space Station to perform spacewalks and install components to the orbiting structure.  

According to an announcement made by Lori Garver, NASA’s deputy administrator, on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, President Barack Obama has decided to use the Orion space capsule, one part of the now defunct Constellation Program, as an on-board emergency escape system for the International Space Station.  

NASA just released a photograph taken by a crew member of a Russian Soyuz spacecraft as it backed away from the International Space Station while the space shuttle Endeavour was docked to it.

President Barack Obama has issued a new National Space Policy for the United States. Obama wants “… space as a stable and productive environment for the peaceful use of all nations.”  

The crew of the NASA STS-131 mission has landed its space shuttle Discovery successfully and safety at the Kennedy Space Center, with the STS-132 crew preparing its mission of the space shuttle Atlantic, which already sits on its KSC launch pad 39A.  

Everyone around the world can come together for a “virtual” picnic provided by NASA in honor of the last space shuttle mission, the STS-135 flight with the four-person crew of the space shuttle Atlantis.

A robot will become a member of the International Space Station starting in September 2010 when the STS-133 crew delivers the human-style droid R2 to the Space Station onboard the space shuttle Discovery.  

The NASA space shuttle Atlantis made its last scheduled landing at 8:48 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Wednesday, May 26, 2010. One space shuttle down, two to go. Happy retirement Atlantis!  

A lot of space stuff is flying over your local sky at the end of May 2011 and the beginning of June 2011, like NASA’s Nanosail-D, the first solar sail to orbit Earth, and the space shuttle Endeavour, as it is docked to the International Space Station.
