No xorg.conf and cannot detect ati Radeon 9600 Pro video card 12.04

http://askubuntu.com – I have previously change xorg.conf files to adjust my screen location, but I am stuck with 800x600 or 1024x800 and no other resolutions lspci | grep vga detects the card but I do not get the resolutions that should be associated with the card. I have been unable to adjust the video card on my xserver on 12.04. I have tried to boot into recovery mode and run sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, I cannot find the xorg.conf file when I do a sudo find / -name xorg.conf find no files, sudo find / -name xorg* finds directories and files. Hi, I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 from 10.04 today. However when I rebooted after the upgrade, I was a presented with the text mode instead of the regular graphical mode. I tried to do sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, but still I couldn't log into graphical mode. Then I copied the xorg.conf.failsafe to /etc/Xorg/xorg.conf and did a startx.

I am running Lucid beta1, and following a 'sudo apt-get update -- sudo apt-get upgrade', I no longer have video. It goes to a black screen.

My Statler has no  /etc/X11/xorg.conf .  Another poster with the same problem was told to run "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg".  I did so with no errors (or any output), but still no xorg.conf.  Any suggestions?

I just got my dual screen set up in ubuntu using an nvidia GeForce 8400 GS video card. The nice thing is that it worked as an extended desktop right away. But the resolutions available are wrong. They are not as high as the monitor can go (1440x900), and they are not the right aspect ratio either.

I didn't have any luck adding new modes with xrandr commands.

I don't have a xorg.conf file, and I don't think I ever did.

So, I've been playing around with fglrx, trying to find a setup that I like on my box. I was having some trouble with the install from the repositories (on a Lenovo T500), and so I reset back to normal. I then tried a more manual method used here:

The process caused X to fail to load, so I followed the removal procedures.
