No Sound

http://www.linuxforums.org – Hello, I recently installed Debian on my mother's Dell desktop. Everything has been working smoothly so far except for one problem: there is no sound at all (aside from system beep). I ran Knoppix off of a live CD on the same computer and was able to play some mp3 files (using the same speakers), so I'm sure the speakers and sound card are fine. I've had trouble with sound in Linux before, and usually I end up fumbling in the dark (figuratively speaking) until I manage to fix it; as such, I'm not sure what kind of information would be useful. Here's what I've gathered so far: aplay -l shows: **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: ICH5 [Intel ICH5], device 0: Intel ICH [Intel ICH5] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 0: ICH5 [Intel ICH5], device 4: Intel ICH - IEC958 [Intel ICH5 - IEC958] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 lspci | grep audio returns: 00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02) and lsmod has snd_intel8x0 listed as one of the modules. Please let me know if any more information would be useful. Thanks :) (HowTos)
