No session Menu F18

http://forums.fedoraforum.org – Hey everyone, I'm having an issue switching desktop environments right now. I just upgraded to F18 and there is no session menu for me to choose from(this also happened to me in F17). I was wondering if I had to enable it somewhere or something. Would really appreciate the help because I can't stand gnome and I want to use mate.:D (HowTos)

Today I just tried the elementary desktop environment in my Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. It comes with a Gnome style top panel, main menu on the left and indicators, user menu on the right. At bottom of screen it’s the launcher: Docky. The main menu is only Applications button which shows items in page. The system tray area looks same to gnome-classic.

Initially, when I try to log in to my ubuntu machine (version 12.10) using RDP, I would get an ubuntu desktop background, with no text, menu bars, or anything to indicate it loaded the desktop.

I went through the following instructions that claimed to fix that issue:

Edit the .Xsession file to add the following line:

gnome-session –session=ubuntu-2d

but it caused the following error:

Installing 12.04 went fine, got default background image, but NOTHING ELSE, except right-click gives context menu, so I can set system parameters in the Apple-like GUI.

Got no top menu bar, and no task bar appears when I run cursor into any side or corner.

Sorry I have to ask this. I switched, at least temporarily, to Gnome. Gnome only loads a failsafe session and the chooser itself drops to Gnome 2. When I do log into Gnome - let me see if I can describe this - I get a new top and bottom bar for every successive login and the usable screen gets respectively smaller.

I am using the Mate Desktop Environment v-1.4.1 and having a Mate-Menu applet in the bottom panel: Shutdown [ICON] Applications Places System. See screenshot below.

Is there any way to change or remove the [ICON] on the left of the Applications menu?

Where does Mate take this from?

Last night I closed session normally and today I found many problems:

-No matter whether I try to start session on Unity, GNOME, Gnome-Classic, MATE, etc, it always start Xfce.

caution: 12.10 is not yet released but I was told it will say as is also when release happens (live session)

So, new ubuntu live session does not have option to "logout" and choose different desktop environment (DE).

This function was usable if one installs ubuntu live on USB stick with permanent changes. One can install any software, including KDE (plasma) or LXDE.
