I am among those unfortunate wretches with an Atheros wireless card (ar5001) and I've had problems with it from the day I installed Ubuntu. I've been using Madwifi to connect to the internet, and it's worked fine, until I lately changed my internet connection, got a new modem etc.
I got stuck in using hostapd with madwifi driver.
I downloaded hostapd2.0 & compiled it with nl80211 driver & it started working.
but when I set madwifi as driver in hostapd.conf file then hostapd stopped working.
it is giving following error message :
Configuration file : ./hostapd.confg
ioctl[SIOCSIWMODE]: Invalid argument
Could not set interface to master mode!
madwifi driver ini
