New kernel fails to load fglrx (ATI driver)

http://forums.fedoraforum.org – On my aging laptop running F17, after a recent yum update, I found out that the (ATI HD 3650) no longer starts, and dies with a blank dark screen. After re-installing fglrx (and re-patching, because AMD no longer supports HD 3xxx series), I get a screen that's corrupt, and fails to load completely. the machine hangs and cannot be used. If I delete xorg.conf, I can get to the machine.. It loads "fbdev_drv".. The graphics are very sluggish and no OpenGL. With the xorg.conf intact (specifying to load fglrx) If I use the command line, I see that modprobe fglrx loads it fine (in (HowTos)
