Networkmanager applet quit working

http://forums.fedoraforum.org – I have Fedora 9 on a laptop. I don't generally use the Gnome tools having learned Unix on the command line, but I do use the "NetworkManager Applet" - the thing that shows you available wifi networks and cellphone tethers and allows you to choose one. A few days ago it just quit working - the applet is present on the toolbar, but with a red "X" and wired/wireless networks greyed out saying "device not managed". I don't remember changing anything or getting any yum updates - the system was working, someone closed the lid putting it to sleep, and when it came (HowTos)
