I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on an LG laptop. I'm connecting to my home wireless network with WEP encryption.
The default Network Manager handles this fairly well. However, I prefer using Wicd, since it starts scanning for networks at boot time, saving me an annoying wait after I log in.
I wanted to share the problems I ran into while switching, and how to avoid them.
I've been reading some stuff on using wicd as opposed to nm, in relation to a problem another forum user had posted.
It's suggestion was the removal of the network-manager package, and installation of the wicd package.
WELL. I can't find any network-manager package in my system to remove or even tinker with :/ All I could find was nm-applet.
In short words I had issues with wi-fi so removed network manager. Used windows OS (dual booting w7 and 12.04) to download Wicd 1.7.2.4. extracted it and installed. However wcid worked properly with wired connection but could not connect to wi-fi. Re-installed network manager wich works properly now and wicd connects to wi-fi too. As soon i remove network manager wicd connects only to wired.
I'm trying to use wicd instead of network manager because I want a "no fuss" way to use wireless on wmii. However, wicd will not find any networks unless network-manager has been run and has connected to a network since startup. If it hasn't connected to a wireless network, the wicd will find no networks, and iwlist won't provide a list of networks either.
Hello there,
Its been 2 or 3 days now I am hunting for a solution to this problem, My computer is running on Backtrack 5 R2 (GNOME).
I have a TP-LINK WN821N and two computers, both with 12.04 LTS and 12.04.2 LTS. The computer with 12.04 does not have graphical environment, I tried network-manager but did not work so I installed wicd (with wicd-cli and wicd-curses).
So my WiFi can connect with WICD, but not the default KDE network manager. I would like to know why. Do both these applications handle the connection differently? If so what would the difference be?
My hardware is a Broadcom 4313. I've tried the STA drivers and the open source drivers, and a few other options with Network Manager. None of which worked.
After experimenting with wicd I've gone back to network manager. All is well on the networking front however I am having trouble stopping wicd completely.
I've stopped it starting up the daemon
chkconfig --list | grep wicd
returns empty
but when my kde windows starts up the wicd try icon start up.
Trying to post again....last time the post failed after a page long description
Network manager was getting on my nerves with either constantly connecting to a network or asking me to do so. I dont want to have to disable my wireless (i use 2 adapters) just to get it to shut up. So I decided to use WICD. I installed WICD and then later removed NM.
