Network Settings missing; cannot connect to the Internet

view story

http://askubuntu.com – When I go to click on NETWORK in the System Settings menu, the only option I have is Network Proxy. The Wired Connection and Wireless connection options are gone. Also, can someone tell me how to get the firmware for a wireless connection? This is an acer Aspire 3690 running 12.04LTS. I'm fairly new to Ubuntu, thanks for any help you can provide! (HowTos)
