I performed an upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04, after a few hours the system restarted itself. I saw a login prompt on the display, but the system does not respond to my keyboard or mouse input. Tried to restart the system multiple times, still the same.
Any recommendation on how to recover from this and still keep the program and datas I had on the system?
Using 12.04 LTS - few days ago, I left my machine on while I went out. On my return, the launcher was showing (it is set to be hidden) and there were small numbers 1-9 on the icons and letters s on the bottom-most icon and t on the rubbish bin. System still worked fine, although the launcher remained visible, and would not hide.
I have just installed 12.04 LTS 32-bit. I have been using Ubuntu 11. When I was using Ubuntu 11, I have known that the launcher can be set to auto hide when windows are in full screen mode and appears again when it is in small windows size.
But with 12.04, this thing can't happen. Another thing, there is no sound when I log into Ubuntu. The rest are no problem.
I'm very new to Ubuntu. I did this :
sudo apt-get -f install
And when I rebooted the system, I couldn't log into the system.
When I proceed with the user name and password I get a small pop-up saying :
Failed to load session Gnome ( Log Out )
What went wrong? Are there any ways there to get back to my previous state?
Thanks in advance.
I'm not sure if it disappeared today, I don't use it much. But for some reason I needed to use it today and it was not there. I completely purged and reinstalled indicator-messages, did an update&upgrade, even a dist-upgrade and nothing.

But when i used ubuntu 12.04, this thing can't happen. Other that, there are no more log in sound in my ubuntu.
I have 3 partitions on my HD: Windows, Ubuntu 12.10 (just installed), & Swap. When I boot the computer into Ubuntu, the side bar shows the Windows partition as mounted and it appears as a "folder" in the list of other folders in "File System". I would like the boot to NOT mount Windows, and to have Windows shown in the Side bar (as it did in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS as "OS").
I stopped using rhythmbox years ago because I thought banshee was better, now I would say as far as the 2 players go rhythmbox seems to be much less buggy, (no this isn't a which player is better thread so lets not go there) anyway I use bash scripts to control banshee after login, to get it to start in the background and play music automatically, I want to switch to rhythmbox but can't seem to fi
I just upgraded my F9 system to F10 using they preupgrade method, and though nothing seems to have failed during the upgrade I can't boot my system any longer.
I have a completly encrypted system, and so I need to enter a passphrase at boot. The new F10 system does boot and I do get a Password: prompt but the passphrase is not accepted.
