The Interstellar Boundary Explorer has shown that that the edge of our Solar System is more dynamic that scientists once thought. A NASA solar scientist states, “… our place in space is not constant.”
The U.S. space agency NASA will announce on Thursday, June 9, 2011, that the edge of our Solar System is not smooth as once thought but, instead, is a “turbulent sea of magnetic bubbles.”
The NASA probe Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) took images of the Sun. And, these images were processed by scientists at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Some people think an object in the video appears to look like a UFO spaceship refueling, but NASA says otherwise.
How about a planet that acts like a comet! The Hubble Space Telescope has found planet HD 209458b. NASA says it is a gas giant that is so close to its star—about 4 million miles away—that its atmosphere is escaping into space so fast that the created winds look like a sweeping tail of a comet.
With a whole lot of exploration of the Solar System going on over the next few years, NASA announced on October 7, 2010, that 2011 will be the Year of the Solar System. But, wait, there’s more!
The Mars rover Spirit has been in hibernation on Mars due to the planet’s harsh winter. The mission team at NASA for the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) Spirit hope it will awaken from its deep slumber. They are listening for signs of life.
