My son in law called round today whilst I was at work and used my computer. Dunno what he has done , but now when I select shutdown, the computer doesn't shutdown, but goes to the login screen. I've checked the settings and am convinced it should shutdown completely when I select turn computer off. Any Ideas ??
I'm a new user to Ubuntu. While I haven't had many issues with the OS since I've installed it, I have had one odd problem. Whenever I shut my computer down and later turn it back on, the power button lights up and the machine appears to be on but nothing happens, my screen shows no signal. I've been having to hard boot it off and then turn it back on again to get my computer to actually work.
Due to a bug my computer has stopped in the middle of the boot sequence, just waiting. If I type anything, it prints stuff like ^[[B. I do not want to damage the files on the computer by pressing the power button.
Is there some way I can exit the boot sequence and go to a prompt so that I can type shutdown -h now or reboot to safely turn off or restart the system?
Hello!
I have Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation and Fedora 17, both OS are 64 bit, on dual boot.
Windows and Fedora work OK, with one problem - i can not shotdown computer from Windows.
When i hit Shutdown, computer begin shutdown, but there is no shutdown, only return me on windows login screen.
Restart is OK, shutdown from Fedora also OK.
This problem only appears on dual boot Win8 - Fedo
So my computer has the following partitions:
/dev/sda -- (I know this isn't a real partition, but more so the boot loader)
/dev/sda1 -- (Windows 7 Boot Loader)
/dev/sda3 -- (Windows 7)
/dev/sda4 -- (Data partition, NTFS)
that means i have
/dev/sda2 as free space.
I do not want to change the MBR of the computer. I would like /dev/sda2 to contain GRUB AND Ubuntu.
I have installed ubuntu alongside windows 7 in a brand new computer and it worked fine for some days. Eventually, Windows showed some problems, but after a safety mode initialization it was working again. Then, Ubuntu cracked and I couldn't use it. After that, I have reinstalled Windows using the recovery CD and now I can't boot from the CD.
Hi,
I have a problem with my computer occasionally restarting on shutdown.
Sometimes when i shutdown it reboots.
Okay, the problems with my computer are becoming unacceptable, and no one has even tried to help me with them yet. Hibernate works, sure. I STILL NEED TO BOOT FROM A USB BOOTABLE DRIVE, OR ELSE IT STILL WILL NOT BOOT!Now, I have an even worse problem!!! Almost every time I try to turn the computer on, right after it actually powers on, it will power off.
So i'm haveing a rather weird bug with Ubuntu 12.10 x64. I just installed it on my laptop. When I shut down the computer it will shutdown pause a sec then turn back on again! I know its not a hardware thing because it is a brand new laptop and one of my co-workers has the same issues on his computer(later resolved buy installing Mint) Anyone have any idea what this might be and how I can fix it?
