new to android, still learning....

my backup phone is Ace S5830, running 2.2.1,

before i root, do i need to upgrade my android to be 2.3.3 or will it be upgraded when i root?

Hi, I think I'm ready to take the Plunge here...I think I want to Root my SGH-T989 but am not sure where to start. I found some places that tell help you AFTER you install ICS. , However, I have gone backwards, using Odin5, to Gingerbread 2.3.6 (T989UVDLE) Kernel: 2.6.35.11.

I have a few questions:

1. What do I need to do or where to go to start this process?
