This has only been tested on an older Optimus V with the Hitachi screen baseband zv4.
I had a newer version DINC2 with firmware build 6.01.605.05 and followed this guide:
http://androidforums.com/incredible-2-all-things-root/592064-guide-how-m...
That went fine.
some of the guides and such in this section are somewhat out of date.
Just thought I'd make these links all a little easier to find as i've been seeing many people looking for the solutions they provide.
I have nothing to do with the making of any of these tools, direct all thanks to the Devs.

Hi, I think I'm ready to take the Plunge here...I think I want to Root my SGH-T989 but am not sure where to start. I found some places that tell help you AFTER you install ICS. , However, I have gone backwards, using Odin5, to Gingerbread 2.3.6 (T989UVDLE) Kernel: 2.6.35.11.
I have a few questions:
1. What do I need to do or where to go to start this process?
