In saucy, hwinfo has been deprecated and is not available in the repositories. What is an alternate way to figure out the available vbe modes like in the output of hwinfo --framebuffer without going to grub and running vbeinfo?

When I first turn on the computer the mouse works as usual, but shortly after that the mouse cursor will stop moving and will stay stuck in one spot on the screen. This is hard to describe but although the picture of the cursor is stuck in one spot on the screen the position of the mouse seems to continue to update.
For the past few weeks my mouse cursor suddenly becomes imprisoned. By this I mean I am using one of my mice (Microsoft Basic Optical USB or Logitech Wireless USB) and the cursor becomes stuck. I can still move my mouse around the screen and click - I just can't tell where I am clicking, as the cursor does not move.
I have Xubuntu 12.04 installed on my computer and there is an annoying problem with my mouse cursor. When I start the computer, it is usually fine, but if I leave it for a while it goes in sleeping mode, as it should, and then, e.g., in an hour I wake it up from sleeping mode, the mouse cursor is not there. Actually, it is only invisible but it is still active.
I just upgraded from 8.04 Ubuntu to 10.04. The mouse cursor works fine during login. As soon as the system switches to the desktop, the arrow cursor "image" disappears (remains working ..you just can't see it). The OS will also randomly shut down requiring a re boot.
