I love colors in my console, and I wonder if there is any way to get a terminal (I guess only a software is able to do that) printing almost everything in colors.
Of course there is the --color=auto things, but it works for a few commands (ls, grep...?).

I am pretty new to UNIX and would like to know how i can run unix commands on a windows 7 machine. Basically, I want to practice running commands, created bash/awk/etc. scripts. I've read some things about cygwin, but it doesn't sound like it's exactly what I'm looking for.

I m trying to run a batch script in Windows server which executes unix commands on the unix server...the problem is i wnt the output in HTML format.so in my batch script i m giving the cmd like
ksh HC_Report.ksh>out.html...but it generates the HTML file in

I am creating a java software on linux ubuntu. I want to to open linux terminal from inside java, set commands to the terminal, execute the commands and then close the terminal. All these by clicking on a button in java. So in short, the user of my application will not need to know any linux commands. In fact my software consists of configuring linux ubuntu 12.04 as server from java.
I used to have a co-worker who was really good at UNIX.
He showed me how to use Vi to edit my shell commands.
He placed the command in a file that ran every time I logged in.
Since then, I've moved to a different project.
Unfortunately I don't remember how to set this up.
Is there anyone here who knows how to use Vi to edit commands in the terminal?
I'm planning to learn Unix/Linux as much as possible to be able to expert on Unix system.
I have a few questions in regard to Unix system
1. How come they are so many different type of Linux, and do they follow same standard commands in the Unix system? I'm afraid of having so many choices selecting right type of system.
