Have you changed your theme.??? Buttons are configured in "systemsettings/workspace appearance/window decorations" and then the configure buttons box to change actions.

I'm pleased to report I've successfully installed Kubuntu and Windows 7 on my new Asus netbook as a dual boot. Things are running fine so far, except that the windows in Kubuntu are missing the minimize button. I tried right clicking at the top of the window and choosing "More actions" and then "Special window settings," but I can't find a way to add that minimize button.
I cannot find how to install new "styles" in KDE. The color of the interior of windows, the appearance of buttons and progress bars, etc. can only be changed under System-Settings>Application-Appearance->Style, yet I cannot find how to install new ones. I can install new window decorations and desktop themes, but these have no effect of the above mentioned characteristics.
Experianced Gnome 2 user here (on Scientific Linux 6). I can shift window buttons from right to left in Gnome 2 using configuration editor. No luck in MATE 1.6. The string is correct (apps>marco>general, then under button layout "close, maximize, minimize:" or "close, maximize, minimize:menu") But the buttons don't move.
I installed compiz and emerald, and everything is working perfectly, except when an application is launched, the "red x" at the corner of the window and the minimize maximize buttons are not clickable. I can't even click and drag the top of the window. The only way I can close/maximize/minimize the window is by right-clicking the icon in Avant Window Navigator and unmaximizing.
Emerald is working fine. But when I restore a window which was maximized; the close, maximize and minimize buttons are invisible. The buttons are there and working like if i move the cursor where the button suppose to be the drop down menu comes with the descriptions like close etc. But when an application is launching directly to non-maximized state then the buttons are visible.
