Salix MATE is officially back. Our previous MATE release (back in 13.37) came with high praise from a lot of our users, with many considering it as our best release ever. Salix MATE 14.1, built around the latest MATE 1.8 desktop environment comes to follow up with that.
I have freshly instaled Ubuntu 14.04 and I installed MATE using apt-get install mate-desktop-environment (and before that, I added needed repositories from mate official website). Everything worked fine. However, when I started a MATE session, it looked like this:
Ubuntu MATE Remix is still under development and its makers are looking to integrate it under the great umbrella of Ubuntu. It will take a while to make that happen, but until then, Ubuntu users will have access to MATE PPA.
The Ubuntu MATE Linux distro is built by a team and one of the developers is also working on the MATE desktop.
Since the recent update in F18 of mate to the 1.6.1-6 desktop, I have begun having desktop problems. I saw that a large amount of CPU was being taken by the desktop, and 'top' showed that 'mate-appearance-properties' was taking 99% of CPU resources. I have been having recurrent instances of the '10 caja open at login' problem; contrary to some claims, not even the latest upgrade solved it.
