Many ISP's is block port 25, how do I choose an alternative port?

http://serverfault.com – I am building an application that will be acting as a combined MUA/MTA on different networks. However, many of the networks are with ISP's that block port 25 for SMTP. Therefore I would also like to open up a secondary port so that some of the installs can communicate on that if port 25 is closed. How do I choose a second port? I know some people use port 26 or port 2525. What is the correct way to choose a port that won't interfere with existing software? (HowTos)

so i have the lg esteem on metro pcs and ive rooted it. i aso use wifi tether to play games on my laptop using my 4g, but i cant pay diablo 2 because i get a error saying port 6112 is closed. ive tried the port forwarding app but it doesnt work. ive also ran a port scanner i found that says port 53 on my phone is the only port open. any assistance in solving my problem would be appreciated.

I changed my server SSH port to something else than port 22, however when I access to domain.com:<ssh-port> I can see an output of

SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.8p1 Debian-7ubuntu1

I want to block direct port access except SSH, how can I do this with the iptables?

If I reuse port B, Linux kernel occurred tcp port binding error because port already in use ?

My Mic-in port is somehow damaged. I'm not using my Line-in port. SO I want to use my Line-in port as my MIC-in port (Microphone). So that I can continue using skype and other VOIP Apps. If there is any way to reconfigure my port setting Please let me know.
