We're looking into the new Lync server from Microsoft and I'd like to get to the basics.
One of the vague questions for me is regarding external calls. How does Lync connect you to an external call? Is this done via some kind of connection between the Lync server and a PBX? And, is that the only way you can make use of Lync?

Jacques
I have configured a Lync system which is successfully working with the Lync windows client.
I followed the instructions at http://blog.schertz.name/2010/12/configuring-lync-server-for-phone-editi... and was able to successfully configure DHCP and DNS.
I'm having a strange issue. Currently I have Lync 2010 standard deployed in my environment. With the Lync client (v. 4.0) the automatic sign-in works fine. BUT, with my OCS R2 client, the automatic sign-in isn't working. Any idea why this might be?
I am a complete beginner concercing Microsoft Lync and PBX systems, so please bear with me.
I have set up a Lync standard server which is running fine. We can chat/audio & video conference on our internal network.
I am using lync on windows and it works fine. Now i've shifted to mac, installed the lync and try to connect it gives me the following error
"Sign-in failed because the password is incorrect or the sign-in name does not exist. If you have forgotten your password, choose Help Topics from the help menu"
I have Lync 2010 Standard deployed in my environment, along with an edge server. On my firewall I have NAT'd the public address(s) to the server. Right now I have all the ports opened for these addresses to work, but now I want to lock this down for security concerns. Is there a complete list of ports that Lync needs opened in order to work properly?
While Windows 8 and Office 2013 get all the hype, it’s time for Microsoft partners to focus on Lync — the unified communications platform. Lync was the big winner in Microsoft’s latest earnings results. It’s available on-premises and within the Office 365 cloud. Some hosting providers also offer Lync. And what about Microsoft VARs?
I've some problem in the configuration of Exchange 2010.
My topology is like that:
Server1 = Domain Controller
Server2 = Exchange Server
Server3 = Lync Server
Server4 = Lync Edge
Our public address (the one accessible by outside world) is directed to Server4.
I would like to have access to my exchange mailbox from external network and also to the OWA.
Could you help me in the configuration
I need to set-up Lync on a Server 2008 machine. The problem is that Lync cannot be set up on a Domain Controller. That means I need to have one Server 2008 that's a domain controller and another that's Server 2008 running Lync.
I figured the best way would be hosting it on a single machine, using virtual machines.
I installed Server 2008, but now my question is this.
