I have 4 2TB hard drives and I was thinking about using Raid 10. This would give me 4TB correct? My next question is would it be easy to add more hard drives to the raid array. For example if I bought another hard drive can I add it to the array without backing up any data?
Basically I want to be able to start off with 4TB and when the space becomes full add more space as needed.
Hi,
I'm trying to get a windows 7 64bit-ubuntu 64 bit dual boot working onto a dell studio-xps-8100 with an EXISTING raid 0 array with 2 identical 2 tb hard drives with a ich8r/ich9r/ich10r/do/pch sata raid controller. I'm able to install ubuntu but not grub so I'm not actually able to boot into it.
A while back I created a RAID 6 array consisting of 5 2TB drives and formatted it with XFS and set up the block and stripe size appropriately.
Yesterday I added two more 2TB drives to the array and it is almost done reshaping the array. While running that I realized that XFS is optimized for the number of drives, and so far as I can tell there is no way to change that after the fact.
Before my installation of 12.04 server I read a lot on the forum about raid install and problems with Grub not being able to boot from anything other than a raid 1 array. However I had no problem at all with installation on a raid 6 array (5 disks) using mdadm.
What I did using Alternate 12.04 CD:
1. Choose Manual partion
2. Wipe all 5 drives
3. Assign all drives to a Raid 6 array
4.
In F17 and earlier I have been able to boot from install disk and then ultimately access a raid 1 and then do a custom install. I select a root partition and home partition, etc., and the size of each, always reserving some free space in the volume group that is on top of my raid 1.
In F18 install I can't even see any raid.
A while back, I set up an old box I had with Fedora to use a machine to store my backups. I had 3 drives, a 500gb and 2x 2TB. I installed Fedora 15 on the 500gb, set the 2TB drives in a software raid 1, then pointed /home at the raid 1 array. Lastly, set up a samba share so I can back up files from my win7 machine.
Fast forward to this week, I couldn't boot into Fedora 15.
So my experience with RAID is minimal. So I figured I'd come and ask here. We have a 16 drive RAID system that have 15 drives in RAID 5 with a hot spare left over. Recently one of the drives in the RAID was giving errors so I cloned it over to the hot spare and put a new drive in it's spot. I made the new drive the hot spare as I was told.
I have a raid array of hard drives in a Sun x4600 that need to be moved out, and another Sun x4600 ready to accept those hard drives.
The problem is: in my limited experience with servers, it seems like hard drives added to a server always get wiped by the raid controller because the controller insists on "initializing" drives before recognizing them as a raid array.
Yes, I have backups.
Is it
I am trying to install 12.04.2 LTS to a blank 40G IDE hard-drive that was previously used in a raid array under windows XP. I used GParted to delete the existing partition on the drive leaving the disk blank. The desktop CD could not even see this drive. I then tried partitioning/formatting the disk with an ext4 primary partition. The installer still could not see the drive.
