First off, I am new to Ubuntu. I come from a Windows background (DOS before that) and am loving it so far. I installed it on an older Dell laptop that I wanted to get another year out of. I set this machine up primarily as a LAMP development machine for a project I am working on.
The machine is a Vostro 1500 and it has 4GB RAM (maxed) and an upgraded hard drive.
this isn't any kind of software issue. it's not about how to get adobe flash properly working, or what kind of graphics adapter i have.
Hey all,
Yup, my ubuntu becomes slow after running it for over an hour. Especially after watching some videos on youtube. The operating system has also freezed once or twice. Had to switch it off via the power button on my laptop.
I use the live Ubuntu disc a lot. Doing that, I'd like to have YouTube play me some background music.
When I go to YouTube, I can't watch any vids because it says it's missing plugins. (and I can't install those on the live disc). However, when I see a youtube video embedded on another website, it actually is possible for me to watch it! It's kinda weird and really interesting.
My Hard drive has very little free space left. Thus I am trying to get youtube-dl to save the videos onto my external drive. With no luck, so far. Has anyone tried that? Or any ideas on how to proceed?
I have a Dell Vostro 1500. Before I wiped Windows XP off my hard drive in 2009, I had a full ~7 hrs battery capacity. I installed Ubuntu 9, and the capacity immediately dropped to about 11%. I couldn't figure out what to do, so I've just lived with the 20-30 minute battery life ever since.
I upgraded to Ubuntu 10, and the issue remained.
I'm fairly new so I'll try to be clear. I have a Samsung RV510 laptop (Dual core, 4GB Ram, Chipset graphics etc) In the past I have used Windows 7 and 8 on the machine and 3D/2D graphics have run fluid and fast. Since putting Ubuntu 12.10 on the machine, opening up the console, watching youtube vids or moving windows around just seems to be very laggy or jittery.

I have two similar machines running Ubuntu Server 12.04.01. They are not the same machine, but similar. Can I take the hard drive out of one machine and drop it in the other machine? The other machine has a little bit better specs, but the older machine has the configurations just as I want them.
I am running Windows 7 OS and Ubuntu OS on the same machine my machine have the following specifications:
Processor : Intel core i5 2.4 ghz
RAM : 4 GB
Machine : HP Pavillion g6
I have made a separate partition for both the Operating system and both operating systems are running all the applications normally.
