I'm using ubuntu, and I'd like my /var/log/syslog file to display unix_chkpwd lines, such as this one (which it doesn't do at the moment) :
Feb 6 04:20:40 www unix_chkpwd: password check failed for user (root)
I'd rather not install linux_pam unless really necessary because I already tried it and I've had quite a lot of problems with it.
Everything is normal until I put my laptop into hibernation. On waking up, it seems to resume OK except the cursor arrow is surrounded by a square black box which gradually obliterates the screen as the mouse is moved around. The only option is then to restart Ubuntu. I have been unable to find anything relevant using the search facility.
Do any of you know a good free On the fly encryption/decryption security program to run portably on a usb thumb drive? I am looking to use a drive at work with some information and programs that I need to be able to get and use easily but keep secure. I have looked at TrueCrypt, but it requires Administrator privileges on windows to run portably.
I just saw a show online about some store up north. They have this handy little handheld scanning device that customers can use in the store to get prices and info on their purchases. Doesn't this sound eerily like the good ole Scancat???!!! Sorry I don't have the details. I'm trying to find it.

Tired of not knowing anything except Windows. Bought a Dell mini with Ubuntu 8.04 installed on it and I'm working on learning Unix from the command line. This Forum ought to be helpful once I get a little further along.
