In Linux How to check through scripts what version of Java is installed?

I just installed Fedora 17. I'm setting up the Android Build Environment and need Java.

I downloaded and installed jdk-6u32-linux-amd64.rpm I ran

java -version

and it spit out the correct version.

Well a day or two later i tried my first compile in Fedora 17 and it complained about java and failed.

Compiling is easy but when using java to run the programs, it gives Exception found. I am using Ubuntu 12.04 without internet connections. Also, installed Oracle JDK7 and JRE7. Also did the update-alternatives command on java, javac and javaws. Changed the machine java in /etc/profiles. PATH is pointing to oracle java folder.

I trying to deploy the latest Java RE version via GP, Java 7 update 9. I want to update computers that are currently running an older version of Java, a mixture of 7.6 and 7.7, some computers are running versions as old as 6.31. Some are running a mixture of both.

Java version 7.6 just came out in the last couple of days. The link to Check your Java version is in my signature and it will probably say that you have the latest version if you have 7.5 installed.

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 which by default came with OpenJDK. I've since installed Sun's Java 6 using apt-get.

I'm unable to use web-based java content due to my version being out of date.

Hello, I would like to update java on some of my servers running Solaris 9 & 10. The most common version of java on the servers is java 5. I would like to remove this older version and install java 6, even though it is fully patched. The main program that uses java 6 is NetBackup. This program is not patching their embedded java fast enough.

im new at linux and i need some help i have no idea, i installed an older version of java but the game im trying to play needs a newer java. need help what kind of command do i have to put in to install java 7?
