I got a new laptop (Asus K55A) and I am trying to dual boot ubuntu along with windows 7 (boots into UEFI mode and has GPT partition).
I finished installation from a LiveCD. I was able to use ubuntu from LiveCD for most common applications, video/graphics/audio/wireless/touchpad all seemed to work fine.
When I start my computer, I see the grub menu with ubuntu and windows option.
I tried the live boot CD and boot-repair, also loaded the Desktop install CD, and it looks like all partitions check out OK.
However, when I try to boot Linux (the only bootable partition on the computer) I get a blank screen.
Every so often the screen give me something akin to:
Assuming write through cache
Asking for cache data failed
it appears to start booting, then hangs.
I am installing Arch on an old Dell laptop with a NV11 GeForce2 video chipset. Although adding "nomodeset" to the kernel pararmeters line works fine when I boot from the Arch install CD, I can not get a console or anything else when I boot from the new install.
I have installed ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop. I also have win 7. the thing is I can only boot into both when I change graphics settings in the BIOS menu and I have to make it integrated. If I have it on switchable, when I try and boot into ubuntu, it shows a purple blank screen for a little while then screen goes blank. If I change it to integrated, I can boot into ubuntu fine and everything works.
laptop is Inspiron 7010 ubuntu verson 12.10
I did the boot-recovery from my 10.04 live CD
The next 5 or 6 starts were successful but then blank screen again I repeated the process and got back into linux.
I think I have something wrong in grub2 from an update. now what?
my PC will not boot.I have tried to repair on the start up screen and by YaST with on success. sometimes it says device.map is wrong.
/boot/grub/device.map:

/boot/grub/menu.1st:

i installed ubuntu 12.04 server onto an older pc i had laying around and am getting a grub screen and when i go to boot ubuntu i get a blank screen and then the tv loses the signal from the box. its hooked up rgb and did work fine with 10.04 but i havent booted it up for about 2 months so wasnt exactly recent the last known good boot.
Updated this weekend from 10.04 to 11.10 and now when I boot, I get the standard "Mythbuntu" boot screen then sections of text, then blank screen, then text, then blank scree, etc until I finally just get a black screen.
I am Running an ATI video card HDMI out to TV.
Two lines appear and disappear too quickly to read when booting, followed by a blank purple screen that takes up most, but not all, of my monitor. It just hangs there. I have no idea how to fix this. Holding shift during boot successfully takes me into boot options (normal and recovery mode), and I can get into Grub, but I'm not sure what to change to successfully boot into Ubuntu.
