Ubuntu 12.04 LTS – Precise Pangolin uses Unity Interface as the default user interface.
GNOME 3 – The Next Generation Desktop is optimized for speed and productivity. If you haven’t installed the Gnome Shell in Ubuntu 11.10, then you must give it a try – because by default you are using the unity interface of Gnome 3 instead of Gnome Shell (Latest Version : 3.2).
Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) is rocking! It has gaining tremendous popularity among the common desktop users (specially developers). If you’ve been using Ubuntu for a while, then might be aware about some critical changes in last few versions.
Ubuntu 12.04 comes with Unity, by default, based on Gnome 3.*, new features in Unity interface such as HUD seems to be cool but many people still doesn’t like Unity. Gnome Shell Interface is another great option for them. Since, both the interfaces are built on the top of Gnome 3.* – they have no compatibility problem at all.
Ubuntu 12.10 comes with Unity Desktop environment/shell (based on GNOME 3). A lot of users love unity, they like the cools features of unity (Unity dash, lens, launcher etc) , but there are lots of haters too.
Unity is the default desktop in Ubuntu 11.10 (current stable version) or 12.04 LTS (upcoming, although beta 1 has released), so if you’re a new Ubuntu users and want to tweak some default settings (e.g fonts, icons, themes, behavior, launcher etc) of Unity Desktop, then try the Application called – MyUnity, very similar to what Gnome Tweak Tool does for Gnome Shell interface.

In Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin), a lot of users complained about the Unity Desktop (which is the default one) – the loss of productivity due to sudden changes, ease of use etc.
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) has got improved unity desktop with a lot of cool new stuffs, and it’s pretty stable! (unlike the previous versions). On the other hand, Linux Mint 13 – which has been released in parallel with 12.04, but with a new desktop based on Gnome 3/shell – called as Cinnamon (which seems to be better because of the Gnome 2 look and feel).
