In future, fdisk will arrange partitions in such a way that the new hard disks with 4-KByte sectors can achieve optimum performance.
hey guys,
i was wondering if there was any chance of recovering a maxtor hard disk, 250gb with about 217 bad sectors using 'dd' command in lxterminal. i also have a hitachi deskstar 500gb with 9 bad sectors, which the bios won't even read.
i checked and asked around, saying that the 'dd' command might be my sole hope of "restoring" these disks.
Basically I have two identical hard disks that are in perfect working order, they just don't have the vibration tolerance they need for the environment they are in. (I am making an educated guess that this is the cause). The disks are in RAID 1 configuration via md raid/linux software raid.
I just set up a new server (Gentoo 64bit with kernel 3.0.17) with 4 x 15000RPM SAS disks(sdc, sdd, sde and sdf), and created soft RAID10 on top of them, the partitions are aligned at 1MB:
# fdisk -lu /dev/sd{c,e,d,f}
Disk /dev/sdc: 600.1 GB, 600127266816 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 72961 cylinders, total 1172123568 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physic
This article examines the implications of 4KB-sector disks, including benchmark tests illustrating the likely real-world effects on some common Linux file systems. As disks with 4096-byte sectors become more common throughout 2010 and beyond, strategies for coping with these new disks will become increasingly important.
People keep telling me that in order to improve SQL server performance, buy the fastest hard disks possible with Raid 5 and etc.
So I was thinking, instead of spending all the money for Raid 5 and super-duper fast hard disks (which isn't cheap by the way), why not just get tonnes of RAM? We know that SQL server loads the database into memory.
Hello,
i'm running a server with two disks in raid1.. it seems that some bad sectors have recently appeared on one of the disks.
Code:
Aug 9 08:26:19 linux smartd[3454]: Device: /dev/sda, FAILED SMART self-check.
It seems that the hard drive on my windows 7 laptop has failed and I'm not able to boot the computer. When I run diagnostics, I get error codes that lead me to a hard drive failure. I'm trying to run Ubuntu Live CD 12.10 to recover the data from my hard drive and came across an issue.
Hi friends
I pluged my mobile phone in my laptop for charging .on that time my external hard disk also plugged in that time suddenly harddisk is down and no other usb is not dictated in sub ports ............
