I have a Compaq desktop which came with a Motorola internal data-fax modem so I ordered abd received Ubuntu 12.10 from Osdisc and the 15 disk repository set. No probs installing op sys or repos But, software center doesn't seem to find repos when I try to update or install software. I have a CentOS 6 server that is in production and actually is hosting a few sites. I should now install Redmine which runs on Ruby. The remi/ephel repository gives me Ruby 1.8.7 but I would like to use the newest version (1.9).
I've had this question for years. How are you supposed to get the newest version of an application once the repository stops being updated? For instance on Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx the newest version of VLC I can get from the repository is 1.0.6 from 2010. Am I supposed to update the whole OS or compile VLC from source? Are those my only two options?
