I recently installed Pidgin and tried to install pidgin-facebookchat. Ubuntu software center now says that pidgin is corrupt so I press repair but nothing gets fixed.
I've tried sudo apt-get purge pidgin but I get this error:

I got Error installing rpm package of Pidgin. I am using Linux fedora 17 OS.
rpm -i /root/Downloads/pidgin-2.10.5-1.fc17.x86_64.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
libgtkspell.so.0()(64bit) is needed by pidgin-2.10.5-1.fc17.x86_64
I was installing pidgin-otr through the terminal and for some reason i got an error saying that the package was incomplete, after a little searching on the forums i found the command to force-remove the pidgin and pidgin-otr package, and after i re-installed it was fine.
strange problem though, maybe i was trying to do too many things at once?

Pidgin is a nice chatting client that is pre-installed in a lot of Linux distributions. Pidgin supports many chat platforms like yahoo, facebook, irc, AIM ... but unfortunately, the popular social network Twitter is not on this list.
However, with the help of a plugin called pidgin-microblog, you can update and check twitter and some other social networks like Identi.ca, Status.net ..

Is there a way that when you click an IRC url (such as irc://##linux) that it will open Pidgin? I believe it has something to do with gconf-editor, but I do not know the terminal command to start an IRC chat in Pidgin.
I am using Linux Mint, if that matters.

I don't know in which scenario should I suggest you to use a console based IM client but I came across Finch for the first time while trying to save my laptop's battery life during power cuts by shifting to old school console . I am not sure whether my basic aim was fulfilled or not but it was fun seeing what ncurses could do :).
