http://askubuntu.com – I have ubuntu 12.04 LTS version 64 bit . what is the procedure for installing and running Java for development purpose. I am new to Linux and Unix platform. Thanks in advance (HowTos)

Dear Forum,

I am trying to run the InstallShield Wizard for java Web Services Developer Pack 2.0.

So I downloaded the latest version of Java from Oracle so I could get a 64bit JVM on Ubuntu Server 10.10. After extracting the file and updating the alternatives I went to check my installation by running java -version and I get this error: -bash: /usr/bin/java: cannot execute binary file

I'm at a loss for what to do here.

I have some problems with running eclipse. First I've installed eclipse and it worked, then I used sudo apt-get ... to install java jdk, jre, pydev, pylucene, numpy, scipy, networkx, matplotlib.

All of installations reported successful but when I start eclipse on Ubuntu, it gives me tons of error.

Is the java not working properly on Ubuntu?

I have already read all the websites and the other forum topics regarding this and I have watched about 5 youtube videos, it all comes down to nothing is working.
