my Xorg hangs when i login to my user in gnome-classic(or shell) with desktop effects.
But when i start gnome-classic without desktop effects i can log in fine to the system
I am a average user of ubuntu
(have tried arch too but it is too much work. though arch documentation is excellent)
though gnome-classic (with effects) used to start some while ago...
I'm running Xubuntu 8.04 (which uses the Xfce desktop environment). I'm wanting to install the standard GNOME desktop as an add-on, but I don't want all the extras (such as extra text editors, games, terminals, etc.).
I just did a fresh install of Fedora 20 and chose Cinnamon as my desktop. To my surprise, Gnome was not install at all.. and thus I feel am I missing a bunch of "stuff" that's normally included in a default Fedora install (w. Gnome). Is there any way I can "fill the gaps" without actually installing the Gnome desktop itself? If so, how?
So i have done the proper install of ARCH linux. I installed GNOME via pacman -S gnomei also used pacman -Syy to sync packages and found gnome needed an update and is on my system up to date with proper nvidia drivers... (the nvidia window shows upon booting the gnome from xinit gnome-session)it went goodupon typing "xinit gnome-session" it doesent go into the full desktop.
Silent version: Example for my hardware, you need to adapt it a little for yours
# yum -y install mesa-dri-drivers xorg-x11-drv-evdev xorg-x11-drv-synaptics xorg-x11-drv-nouveau gnome-shell gnome-js-common gnome-panel network-manager-applet
I need your help in order to get out of a mess I've got in. After installing successfully Ubuntu 13.10, I wanted to install some missing codecs in order to open mp3 and mp4 files. I found the solution in a website page which as well was explaining how to change the desktop interface installing gnome desktop. I should have never done it.
