Hello, I've searched a bit on the forum for an answer to similar problem, but I'm a bit puzzled with the different answers, so I prefer to ask exactly for some insight on my problem here.
Hi
I'm having a problem getting grub to detect my XP partition.
Original configuration:-
Hard drive partitioned with primary partitions (Vista and Vista restore) and an extended partition for data
did not want anything to do with Vista so
I Installed XP in extended partition
Vista boot manager offered Vista or XP
All worked for years
Decided to remove Vista and dual boot with Ubuntu
i downloaded the iso for 9.10 and md5sum'd it (perfect) then burned it and booted and ran check disk for errors (also perfect) i then set up a partition in vista by following the exact instructions from the ubuntu forums (and allocated 48GB for ubuntu) and tried to install. it went fine for a while, then showed an error and shut down and rebooted from the live cd again.
So, this is my first time installing Ubuntu on my hard drive, and I'm running into some problems.
Until a couple of hours ago, I had 4 partitions in my hard drive:
XP,
Vista and
7 installations,
plus a data partition.
I backep up the XP and Vista partitions which weren't of any use lately, and booted a Live-USB with Ubuntu 12.04.
On the "Install 12.04 LTS" partition manager thingy I deleted

I have a dual boot system Vista and Ubuntu.
ok. so i've been going through forums for sometime but i don't think i could find the solution.
anyways my problem right now is that im a complete beginner and i decided to delete my ubuntu partition thinking that without it, i would be left only with my vista partition.
howeverrr.... i found out that i, along with ubuntu, deleted my grub.
I installed Ubuntu on an older Vista Dell computer (AMD) partitioned for three logical drives and one additional physical drive (1) from a defunct machine for storage use only. I created a 26 G empty area on the primary drive (0) for the Ubuntu install. Things went well except that although I chose alongside the dual boot menu never appeared and machine boots to Ubuntu all the time.
In my laptop I had Windows Vista. When Windows 8 Release Preview came, I installed it as dual boot. Now, I want to uninstall Win8 RP and install Ubuntu in its partition. I still want to keep Vista in its own partition. How can I do it? I have Vista and Win8 RP in separate partitions, and after Ubuntu installation, I want to have just Vista and Ubuntu in my boot menu. Please help
