I recently installed Ubuntu 10.4 onto an older computer. Upon trying to boot off the live CD, my monitor would go "out of range" (screen would turn black and display a hardware error message "out of range").

I guess I live in a very small universe because "Never" seems to be about 15 minutes. IN "Power Management => On AC Power" the options are set to "Never" and "Never". It makes no difference.

I burned the files on a CD and then I booted from the CD then i installed Ubuntu and i had checkmarked where it said "Import files from Windows XP..." or something like that and i checkmarked Documents and clicked next. So the installation started and it stoped at 89% [at the part where it imports the files from Windows XP].

I'm having some issues during installation. First of all, when I boot from the cd drive to install, I am not presented with any GUI interface. I'm given 3 choices and must use controls with the arrow keys. "Try Ubuntu without installing", "Install Ubuntu", and some check disk option. I arrow down to Install, and hit enter.

1. installed refit, rebooted to affirm it boots to refit.
2. downloaded Ubuntu (verified md5) and burned iso to DVD.
3. partitioned 60 GB of free space in disk utility
4. inserted DVD, rebooted, from refit boot screen booted to Ubuntu install DVD.
