Xubuntu 12.10 is out! Xubuntu is a Ubuntu based GNU/Linux distribution that focuses on XFCE desktop environment.
I want to install Ubuntu+Xfce( not Xubuntu)
Basically, what i want to do is:
Install Ubuntu 11.10
Make sure that all of the settings are right.
Install Xfce.
How can i do it?
And anothe question:
I need another Desktop Environment with Xfce.
Do you think that Unity 2D is good for old pc?
I mean, that the main will be Xfce, but if i will need another setting that i cant configure on xfce,i
If you’re not happy with the default desktop environment (Unity shell on GNOME3) in Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal), then you can try installing some alternative desktop such as MATE, Cinnamon, KDE etc or a lightweight desktop environment such as XFCE.
Why go for a Lightweight Desktop Environment ?
speed
efficiency
low resource requirements (it can also run smooth on older computers)

I want to install Xfce without xubuntu-desktop or ubuntustudio-desktop (original Xfce 4.10, without extras). I too want to keep Unity (and Unity 2D) on my computer. Are the xfce-meta package great for that?
Thanks in advance!

Hi there.
I'm planning to install ubuntu in an old computer (512MB of RAM) and I want it to have xfce as its DE. So a question arised:
Which of the following options would be lighter for that pc: Xubuntu or Ubuntu Server + xfce ?
Any recomendations are very welcome!
PS: I want to use xfce (not gnome, kde, lxde, etc.)
Thanks!!!
As the title says, a very simple question;
What is the difference between a Xubuntu and an Ubuntu with XFCE (Xubuntu-Desktop packages) installed?
Is there only a difference in installed packages and default applications, or are there other differences as well?
And would there be any reason to install Ubuntu with the Xubuntu-Desktop packages rather than Xubuntu itself?
Thanks.
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS comes with Unity desktop by default. Unity (based on GNOME 3) is cool, a lot of new exciting/cool features seems appealing, but you may not it efficient and productive; In that case, you may try some other ones like Gnome Shell or KDE.
I recently installed the Xfce desktop environment through terminal in Ubuntu2D. I just wanted to see how Xfce performance compared. I logged into it once and now when I turn my laptop on or off I always see the Xubuntu loading/closing splash screen no matter which desktop environment I log in to (or out of).
