I used a live CD to install Ubuntu onto my computer running Windows XP Media Center Edition. I have done this many time before on other computers with no problems.
Now, after installing, whenever I try to run Ubuntu, it goes to a terminal screen showing errors. When I try to boot into Windows, I just get a blinking white line.
Did I somehow wipe windows?
HELP!
First of all, Ubuntu normally works fine on my desktop, but there is one problem:
Sometimes (starting last week) the computer shows the BIOS screen while booting, but then displays a black screen. If I restart the computer by pressing the power-button, the PC starts normally.
What can I do?
I had many years of reliable behavior with my desktop using 10.04 LTS. After upgrading to 12.04 LTS, my desktop is now acting very strange with booting. Rebooting using the "restart" option always works without any problem. Booting after a normal "shutdown" within about 5-10 minutes works without any problem.
i try to install ubuntu 12.04.1 on an old desktop computer.

I have Ubuntu 12.04 installed on my Intel iMac. Except the keyboard everything is working fine out of the box. There is however one thing I like to be solved, that is strange startup behaviour. When I start the iMac Ubuntu will startup and failed to startup turn by turn.
I try install ubuntu in my Acer Aspire 5750g. since ubuntu can't be installed at the first time, so I set the boot option as acpi=off as other people said, which it did work. after I finished installation and restart my computer, I enter grub menu and start the ubuntu, however the computer become black screen. I tried several time but I still couldn't get over this problem.
I keep running into this problem on my Toshiba a305 laptop. I have run Ubuntu once before on the laptop with absolutely no problems. But all of a sudden about every other time I boot up the computer goes from the grub menu to just a black screen and the Caps Lock light is flashing. Then I have to hold down the power button to restart and try again.
Okay, so I'm relatively new to Ubuntu. I've searched and found solutions related to my problem but none that have so far directly worked.
After figuring out how to free up space to make a partition on my computer in order to install Ubuntu 11.10 side-by-side with Windows and installing it, and rebooting my computer, I found myself staring at the Ubuntu login.
