I have installed incorrectly a package for which there was no archive. Need to remove

http://www.linuxquestions.org – I installed a package that now prevents my using Synaptic and otherwise blocks updates etc. I have tried the partial upgrade scenario but it won't remove it. I used - apt-get -f install (bad file name) The response I get is - The package (bad filename) needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it. I tried several other apt-get approaches but the answer is the same. (HowTos)
