Huawei, LG & Samsung join Wi-Fi Alliance

The growing competence of companies like Samsung, LG and Huawei in LTE technology will result in a major redistribution of intellectual property rights (IPR) wealth that is likely to help the whole industry by reducing technology licensing and royalty cost, according to research firm Informa Telecoms & Media.

  Flexible electronics that can be mildly-bended seems to be part of the future in mobile devices. A couple of months back, we reported on Samsung trademarking “Youm” for their flexible AMOLED displays. It’s no secret that Samsung has been working on flexible screens for quite some time now, and it wouldn’t surprise me if other companies are on the same track.

Huawei has announced that it, too, will be joining the ranks of Samsung with the introduction of its own eight-core processor later this year.

The U.S. International Trade Commission announced that it is launching a Section 337 investigation into wireless devices with 3G and 4G capabilities and components by Samsung, Nokia, Huawei and ZTE.

IDC’s Q4 report on the global mobile phone market reveals that Huawei sprang up into the top-three smartphone vendors in the world, a first for the company. In Q4, Huawei held a 4.9 percent marketshare based on unit shipments. This is much less than the 29 percent chunk held by Samsung and Apple’s 21.8 percent slice, but still placed Huawei ahead of Sony and ZTE.
