Perhaps a power supply failure of a critical supply source preventing the cmos bios from running.Remove the PS, connect a jumper from pin 19 (green) to ground (black wired pins, perhaps 20 or 21). This turns on the supply. The fan in the supply should run and stay running. Then, using a listing of interface voltage levels for the power supply....probably ATX standard if a desktop...measure the
when i turned on my pc my power supply made a weird scratchy noise (im pretty sure it was the power supply). so i got a new power supply and when i try to turn on my pc nothing happens.
Sometimes when I pick up my laptop, it decides to stop the power supply running. It will just suddenly go black and not save my documents. When it happens, it makes a high pitch power down noise then just goes to black, where I then need to restart it. What could be the problem? Could my battery be loose?
Also, my laptop says, "consider changing your battery". Is it broken? Or faulty?

Dual Core AMD® Opteron™ 1210; 1.8GHz,2X1MB Cache
Was running my own Apache server and some apps on Ubuntu. Now the server is dead. When I press the power button, there is no response at all. Is this likely a problem of the power supply? How can I quickly root cause the problem? Is there a fuse of some sort in the power supply?
that doesn't explain why it freezes. in case of power supply laptop should be dead or reboot itself, not freeze

I have to replace a very old UPS. We've got a new one. I'm not really a sys admin, but have to act the part, as the previous one left and, well there's no one else. He had it set up with 2 UPS's, and split the power supplies from each server (5 total) so that 1 power supply went to 1 UPS, and the other power supply went to the second UPS. We've got the new UPS in place.
I have a Lenovo Y460p running Ubuntu 12.04 (64-bit). The battery does charge normally, but unplugging the power supply only very briefly shows the correct battery indicator. After about 1 second, it reverts to the charging indicator.
I installed SMXI on my laptop and ever snce then I've noticed an intermittent problem where it will not power off.Shutting down the laptop gives the appearance that everything is shutdown, i get the text display after selecting shutdown and the the screen goes black. To the casual observer it would appear that the laptop has switched off, however the power LED on the side of the laptop
Several months ago my ubuntu (10.04) started to freeze some minutes after boot. I didn't reboot, just get stuck (mouse, keyboard, etc.)
One day it didn't boot at all. It was dead. I tested the power supply and it was broken. I changed it (for a more powerful one) and both problems are gone. Since 3 weeks, the pc is working fine.
