I tried to compile and install X.org (for a single card/multiseat in this tutorial) by getting source from here and installing it by:

make
sudo make install

In the changelog for grub2 on ubuntu, I noticed that several versions ago it was decided by the maintainers to:
Suppress kernel/initrd progress messages, except in recovery mode
This is counter productive for server installs as it can render a system unbootable and without a method to learn about the possible problem.
I am running Atlassian JIRA on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin). I would like to automatically start JIRA whenever the system boots. For this purpose, I created script jira in /etc/init.d, similar to the one described in Atlassian's Wiki.
I can manually start / stop JIRA by calling /etc/init.d/jira accordingly. However, JIRA does not start during the boot process.
My USB has problems not in GRUB but in the boot-up of Linux!
Wwhen I ask linux to boot in text mode, I see a bunch of kernel messages and then my computer freezes about 1/6 times I boot up.
When my wireless wireless card isn't plugged in, ubuntu never freezes on start-up.
Here's the message I receive when it hangs (and I was able to find this in the /var/log/syslog):
[ 0.545977] ACPI: Us
Is there a way to easily turn on/off showing the boot messages (loading the services) when Ubuntu starts? My machine uses WUBI for boot-up.
The reason I am asking is to figure out if the reason for the lockups is caused by events which happen a boot-up. I see messages which are cleared out before I can read them.
I have used Ubuntu before on my previous laptop, after getting a new laptop I would like to install Ubuntu onto it, but I'm running into some major issues.
Firstly when I put the boot disk in it loads up fine until it gets to the try ubuntu / install ubuntu menu, at this point it freezes.
I want to hide boot messages at startup in debian. I saw this link and it was so useful as it said i do this to /etc/init.d/rcS:
exec /etc/init.d/rc S >/dev/null 2>&1
and the result was what I want. but still there are some messages. How can I hide them?
starting portmap daemon ... Already running ..
starting NFS common utilities: statd.
starting enhanced syslogd: rsyslogd.
