I have just installed CentOS 4.8 Final and need to know if it already has build in support for the Linux ABI Project. I really do not want to try to build a new kernel if it is already build in to... [by isru2]

When you think about a source distrobution you probably think of Gentoo and portage, but gentoo isn't gentoo anymore as it uses stage 3 installs which if you don't know a stage3 install is basically a live iso with the needed tools to finished the install.

I've recently built a kernel for my Intel i7 basically using this guide modified to build the 3.5 kernel with patches from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.5-quantal/.

I have a source tarball: ap-kernelmodule-1.0.14-13.tar.gz I have to compile a kernel module out of it and was instructed to install development tools for my Ubuntu version (which is 12.10). The format is: sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r) build-essential

Question #1: what is uname?

(When I installed Ubuntu, I input sharon as my name and which is also my account name.

The new updated Linux Kernel version 2.6.37 is now available for download. If you are still using the older Linux Kernel, it is highly recommend to update to this latest version 2.6.37. You can find many tutorial on how to install or update the Linux Kernel to the latest 2.6.37.
