I have installed Ubuntu 11.10 on a vista laptop, but Dell is providing the BIOS update in .exe format currently my bios version is A09 but on the driver download site the latest version of bios is A011.
Hey guys, I've just got a new Dell Inspiron I14-2530p with native Windows 8, and decided to install Ubuntu for a dual boot.
I had to change the bios settings to Legacy instead of UEFI Secure Boot (I don't know very well what that means, but was the only way I found to boot from the CD-ROM). I've used an old live CD I had for Ubuntu 9.10.
The booting went fine, and so did the installation.
I recently noticed at a clients that their Dell laptops appear to have SMART disabled in bios by default. I noticed this while swapping out a disk on a desktop which had failed without any warning.. wonder why we didn't get anything. :-)
Anyone know how to script bios changes on Dell machines?
I'm attempting to install Ubuntu 12.04LTS, 64 bit onto a Dell Inspiron 15R laptop. I've shrunk down one of the windows partitions and even used gparted to format the vacant space as ext4.
However, the install disk simply does not present any options when it comes to the partitioning step.
I installed Linux mint on an external hard drive and everything was going fine. I next wanted to test my windows to make sure it still worked. I set the Windows boot manager as the default boot option in the bios. Once I confirmed Windows was still working on my internal hard drive, I went back and to the bios to change the boot priority to the external drive with Linux.
I have attempted with 12.04 and the upcoming 12.10 to boot Ubuntu from both a USB and CD on a Dell Inspiron 530, to no luck...
When I use either a USB or CD, the purple screen and Ubuntu logo appears with the orange & white dots moving across the screen, but then nothing else materialises.
I have an AMD64 motherboard with American Megatrends BIOS but I can't figure out how to get it to boot from USB.
Will this work ok does anyone know? I really want to try Suse 11.2 but my Dell inspiron 1420 is all I have for this use right now.
I did a search and didn't find this.
