Linux Mint 13 uses the new login manager - MDM. According to the official site of Linux Mint, MDM has more features than any other login manager currently available but I am not so sure about that because I sincerely dont care much about the login managers. The only thing I can say is that the default login screen of MDM is quite ugly (just my personal opinion).
I am unable to get past the login screen. It won't accept passwords, the screen momentarily goes black, and then returns to the login screen.
I recently found out that you can use CTRL-ALT-F1 to switch from the login screen to the command line. My password works in that situation and I was able to enter terminal mode.
I typed in "startx" to see what would happen.
I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 .

I have auto login enabled, and I just upgraded to 11.04. When I boot, I get a message saying that I don't have the hardware required to run Unity, so I should choose Ubuntu Classic at the login screen. The problem is that auto login bypasses the login screen, and I can't disable auto login via the normal route since I can't start xwindows.
Since Ubuntu 9.10, installing new login screen themes or changing the login window appearances is not as easy as before.

When I arrived at the login screen, I enter my password, the screen goes black for one second, displaying some text, and then it returns me to a fresh login screen.
I can go to a console alt+f1 and login into my account on the command line.
