I'm having a very weird issue with LXDM when launched from a tty.I usually boot my Arch in level 3, and then manually switch to X if I need it. Sometimes I type "init 5", and some other times I type "/etc/rc.d/[whatever]dm start".So if, as a desktop manager, I launch xdm or gdm, everything works ok.
I am setting up a system for students to use to run lab-based exams. On bootup, the system needs to download an encrypted file containing the exam files, and then ask for a decryption password.
I want to do this during system startup (before anyone logs in). But I am having trouble getting keyboard input at this point.
In windoze, the console width was always 80, so it was easy to make console-guis like cmus and links. In linux, however the width can be changed. This really messed up console programs i ported from windows to linux. is there any way to set the console width? even system() commands would do. I know about "stty cols", but it doesnt resize the window.
Is it possible to create a console using the SPI device (/dev/spidev0.0) in a similar way that you would create a serial console, or if not is this possible ??
I am running Ubuntu Server 12.04. I can't log in from the console or ssh. On ssh I get 'Connection closed by <ip>' and on the console if the correct password is given then the login screen just refreshes. I had been trying to install samba4 yesterday but I could still log in after that. This morning I tried to log in and get these symptoms.
I'm using the proprietary NVidia drivers for my Macbook's 9400M graphics card, and while X can start, it seems to have trouble quitting. I can startx normally, but if I kill X or quit my window manager, the screen will go entirely blank.
Hello,
I have a problem with my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with LVM encryption.
A few days ago the system started to behave strange. If I tried to extract an archive it did nothing. Open a pdf-file for example was not possible too. Then I decided to reboot, but there was no reaction. With ctrl+alt+F2 I tried to get to the console to initiate the reboot from there, but I end up with a black screen.
Hi
I just upgraded to 11.2. Everything ok, but one little thing:
After I log in, a window appears saying: "hplip-icon could not be started. There appears to be no systemtray!"
The other problem, I think it's because of the systemtray, too, is that i cant start pidgin from the start menue, but if I start it with console it works..
I have two 3750G stacked and I am locked out of console access. The startup-config console settings are login and local. However, there is no local database, i.e, no username and password is specified. After attempting the normal password recovery (init_flash, load_helper, dir, rename, etc) and booting, the console screen still shows the "username" prompt.
