Everything is going pretty well so far, I've managed to successfully create the launcher but when I click on it, my system complains that the path to the exec is wrong. My exec for eclipse is located here: ~/opt/eclipse/eclipse And if you look at the tutorial you have to create a file and set it's contents like so: [Desktop Entry] Type=Application Name=Eclipse Comment=Eclipse Integrated Development Environment Icon=eclipse Exec=./opt/eclipse/eclipse Terminal=true Categories=Development;IDE;Java; (HowTos)

I run gnome shell 3.6 and Eclipse 4.2. I installed Eclipse manually, in my /opt directory, because the Ubuntu package for Eclipse is very outdated.

I've created a .desktop file for it, and placed in in ~/.local/share/applications.

I have added an program to unity using .desktop file.

I downloaded and installed Eclipse JUNO in Fedora 17, KDE desktop and created an eclipse.desktop. The icon does appear in the Application.Development section but it does not open when selected. I am able to open Eclipse on the command line.

I was tring to install eclipse on ubuntu. What I did: I unzipped the tar archive of eclipse. I tried to start eclipse from the command line - like this - ./eclipse. It works. But then I tried to create a desktop icon with: gnome-desktop-item-edit ~/Desktop --create-new. In a new icon I showed the path to the eclipse executable which I could launch from the command line.

I installed 12.04 xubuntu and latest eclipse. java is also installed. path is set correctly. but there are two things strange to me.

1. when I double click the eclipse executable, it says cannot find java;

2. create a launcher on the desktop, it says the same thing as above;

open a terminal, type eclipse, it will start eclipse without any error.

please, I've installed oracle java jdk and eclipse, and every thing goes well, but I can't add eclipse for the launcher, I have every time i use it to access it from the terminal, my ubuntu is 10.04, but I'm not sure how can I open it from the launcher or even from the desktop ?

I installed eclipse though the unbuntu software center but I experienced some issues and I wanted to install the official eclipse version.

Extracted it, but if I double click "eclipse" it doesn't do anything.

Any ideas how

I use to create .desktop files on my Ubuntu 12.04 for my "personalized-apps" to find these applications from the ubuntu dash.
