With my home network, I am using wireless router that is connected to the internet, my headless server, and three other computers wirelessly. My goal is to add a second source of internet to the network by adding a wireless adapter to the server. In this network, the regular computers can not be used since they can't always be on/stable/in range.
I am trying to accomplish a task that may, or may not, require a creative solution. Essentially, I want to run my own DHCPd and, more importantly, DNS for my home network.
I want to run my own Name Server for the purpose of having *.local names assigned to our various computers and devices.
Ok - I have a very messy home network as follows:
ADSL Modem/wireless router/switch
Various devices connect via wireless and use DHCP to obtain IPs
A desktop with a fixed IP connects via powerline ethernet
A media box running ubuntu 10.04 with a fixed IP connects via a wifi ethernet adapter which also has a fixed IP
Finally, a server running ubuntu 10.04 with a fixed IP which hosts
I am trying Ubuntu on a trial basis to see if I think I could use it in place of Windows. One of the things I can do in Windows is connect my XP laptop thru a wireless access point which is connected by ethernet cable to my desktop, which is set to share its internet connection. The desktop connects to the internet by dialup.
Using Linux and old computers to do cool stuff. Vol. 3In my last tutorial I went over how to use an old computer as a Linux media center for home entertainment. Now I am gonna explain how to use an old computer to store and serve your multimedia files to any network enabled device on your home network including that media center you just got setup.

Hi all,
Hello, I have been running 10.10 server with no GUI for a few months without issue. I decided to install ubuntu desktop (GUI), because I want to turn it into a media server, and I'm finding that my Internet browsing fails intermittently. i.e. I can get google.com sometimes and sometimes not.
Hi Folks,
I have a small local network , with few desktops and one server . The server machine has UBUNTU 12.04 server 64 bit installed on it. Some of the desktops are windows , one is Mac and others are ubuntu . What I am trying to accomplish is to create a local DNS server for my network and DNS server would be present on the server machine.
