How to set the log files viewable with gnome-system-log?

http://serverfault.com – Note this is for a RHEL 5.4 system which uses gnome-system-log 2.16 from the gnome-utils package. Unfortunately for us, the selection of these packages and versions are non-negotiable, at least at this time. When the System Log application is closed, it saves its' set of open log files into the user's folder, in the file ~/.gconf/apps/gnome-system-log/%gconf.xml . We would like to modify this file as there is a predefined set of log files we would like users to be able to see, and we have then made a copy of the updated %gconf.xml in the /etc/skel/ directory.
