I've tried starting a full screen application without a window manager, using xinit,
which works but instead of starting at the top left of the screen the application starts somewhere in the middle of my screen.
I've tried the same using a custom entry in /usr/share/xsessions
and starting that from lightdm instead
of the default ubuntu window manager, but that gives me the same result.

Would appreciate any help

I have setup Solr on a Ubuntu server and can reach the "Tomcat Web Application Manager" application via http://localhost:8080/manager/html and execute solr queries via http://localhost:8080/solr/core_things/select/?q=name:bloggs.
How can I get the manager application to run on a different port than Solr itself?
(I have setup http authentication for the manager application, however I'd prefer it
AllTray is an application which docks other application software into the system tray (“notification area”) of a desktop environment such as GNOME, KDE, or XFCE. It aims to be independent of both desktop environment and window manager.
With AllTray you can dock any application with no native tray icon (like Evolution, Thunderbird, Terminals) into the system tray.
I'm writing a desktop. I already know the basics of Qt and GTK+ through Python but I don't understand how to display the finished Desktop. How do you make it the root window of a Window Manager, or is there a method for displaying the desktop I'm not familiar with?
The application is Conky running under Fedora 12 Alpha. This application is set to start upon logging in to the desktop and it does just that. It appears for a second or two and then disappears from view. Although I don't see it, top tells me it is in fact running. As a result of this unexpected behavior I kill the process and restart the application using the ALT/F2 run application tool.
Actually i am thinking of some usefull application that involves both IPC and pthreads. But i am not quite sure what type of application involves both these together .
Anyways i am now working on creating a simple featured file manager that can do the following:
Display file name and size.
Rename any particular file.(DONT KNOW THIS )
Move any file to any directory
copy any file
I downloaded and installed Eclipse JUNO in Fedora 17, KDE desktop and created an eclipse.desktop. The icon does appear in the Application.Development section but it does not open when selected. I am able to open Eclipse on the command line.
