How to prevent computer from automatically sleeping and/or hibernating?

http://askubuntu.com – I'm running Ubuntu 12.04, and my laptop* won't wake from sleep/suspend/hibernate. (Is sleep the same thing as suspend?) I'm not even sure which of these things it's doing. When I am done working for the day, I lock my screen (Control-Alt-L). When I come back the next day, the screen is in power saving mode, and no amount of typing or clicking (on the usb keyboard/mouse or the builtin keyboard/trackpad) nor tapping the power button will bring it back to life. The only way I can get my machine to work is to hold down the power button until it shuts off, then press the power button again to turn (HowTos)

My nexus s is giving me trouble. While phone is on, keeps waking and sleeping on its own randomly like the power button is being pressed.

If i try to press the power button myself to put it to sleep sometimes it brings up the power off menu instead (as if I've held it), and the rest of the time it does nothing.

I've removed Windows 7 from my Dell Latitude E6500 laptop & installed Ubuntu 10.10 which worked great out of the box but when I shut the laptop lid, the machine goes to sleep but when I try to use it again, I can't wake the laptop up from sleep.

Can't resume after suspend 25 weeks 4 days ago

I am running Fedora 17 on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo li1718 laptop with Radeon Xpress 200m graphics card. When trying to resume after suspend I just get a blank screen. Also the wireless light goes out. No buttons work. I have to hold the power button to force the computer to turn off, then reboot.

I don't know if this is a bug or not so I am not sure how to proceed. :confused:

I run Fedora Linux 3.6.7-5.fc18.i686 with the KDE desktop v 4.9.3.

In 'System Settings' - 'Power Management' - 'AC Power', 'Button events handling'; I have it set to 'sleep' when the laptop lid is closed and it does this OK.

I've just bought a new laptop, an Asus G60JX-JX040V :

Intel Core i5 430M 4 GB RAM Nvidia GTS 360M

It works great with Ubuntu, except that i can't suspend or hibernate. For suspending : the screen becomes black, the hard driver powers off, but the laptop doesn't power off : there is a blinking white dash on a black screen ...

FC18 RC2, with today's updates, here is having problems waking from suspend.

This is a desktop, not a laptop. It appears to go into suspend mode correctly. When I attempt to wake it, the LED's on my monitor indicate the screen is awake, but the screen remains dark except for a flashing cursor in the top left corner. It is not responsive to the keyboard.

Hi, my computer is having issues when I try to put it to sleep (suspend). When I close my laptop (in power settings, i have ti set to suspend) or hit the suspend but in the menu bar, the computer screen goes black (but still backlit) and it continues to run (also, the wifi indicator shows that wifi is turn off).

I hardly ever put my laptop on suspend/hibernate, so I don't know how long I've had this issue for. I'm on Ubuntu 11.10. When I turn my laptop back on again from suspend- a blank screen shows up and none of the keyboard buttons/touch-pad respond; only way to recover is holding down the power button to restart.

I've just rooted my phone (my first root) and installed Nameless ROM v7.2 Build 5 with the 806Mhz image. Right after that everything seemed to be fine.
